CANS (Complaints of Arm, Neck and/or Shoulder)
What is CANS?
CANS is a collective term for a range of conditions that cause pain, stiffness, and reduced movement in the arms, neck, and shoulders. A well-known example within this group is RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury), often caused by repeated movements or prolonged static postures, such as working at a computer. However, CANS is broader and can also include non–work-related issues.
Common Symptoms of CANS
- Pain in the arms, neck, and/or shoulders
- Stiffness in affected areas
- Tingling sensations
- Heaviness in the arms, neck, or shoulders
- Reduced strength
- Limited range of motion
- Gradual onset of symptoms
- Potential for chronic issues if left untreated
How CANS Develops
Symptoms often develop gradually and may become chronic without proper care.
In more severe cases, CANS can significantly interfere with daily activities such as driving, lifting, or even basic household tasks. Pain and stiffness can limit your ability to work and impact personal life — making everyday activities like carrying groceries, using a bag, or sitting at a desk challenging. Persistent symptoms can also lead to frustration, stress, and reliance on others for daily needs.
Causes
CANS can be triggered or aggravated by:
- Repetitive movements: e.g., typing, mouse use, or repetitive physical tasks
- Poor posture: prolonged work in awkward or static positions without adequate support
- Overuse: intense use of muscles and tendons without enough recovery time
- Reduced blood flow: sustained muscle tension can restrict circulation, slow healing, and contribute to irritation or inflammation, which may result in painful movement restrictions
Why Quadrivas Therapy may help with CANS
Quadrivas Therapy offers a natural, targeted approach to support recovery from CANS.
The therapy focuses on improving blood circulation, which assists in reducing inflammation and easing tension in the affected muscles and tendons. Using specialised manual techniques, it works deeply into muscles, tendons, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels. This helps relieve blockages, restore healthy circulation, and encourage tissue repair.
The Importance of Healthy Circulation
With CANS, blood flow is often impaired due to sustained muscle tension or inflammation. Poor circulation can slow tissue healing and may worsen symptoms over time. By stimulating circulation, Quadrivas Therapy supports tissue recovery and can play an important role in both relieving existing discomfort and preventing further issues.
Potential benefits of Quadrivas Therapy for CANS
- Reduced pain and inflammation: improved circulation helps clear waste products and bring oxygen and nutrients to the tissues
- Release of muscle tension: easing tight muscles reduces strain on tendons and joints
- Improved mobility: as muscles and tendons regain flexibility, movement becomes easier and less painful
- Faster recovery: better circulation and reduced muscle tension allow the body to heal more effectively
- Prevention of chronic symptoms: early treatment may help stop acute issues from becoming long-term
- Support for both work-related and non–work-related cases: helps restore mobility, reduce discomfort, and minimise the risk of re-injury
