Lipedema

What is lipedema?

Lipedema is a chronic condition involving an abnormal buildup of fatty tissue, usually in the legs, hips, and arms. It primarily affects women. A hallmark of lipedema is tenderness or discomfort in the affected fat tissue and an uneven distribution that does not respond to diet or exercise.

Symptoms of lipedema

  • Symmetrical fat accumulation in legs, hips, and sometimes arms
  • Tenderness or pain on pressure
  • Heaviness and fatigue in the legs
  • Easy bruising
  • Persistent swelling that does not improve with rest
  • Cool skin in affected areas
  • Cellulite-like texture
  • Reduced mobility
  • Fat deposits resistant to lifestyle changes
  • Symptoms that may worsen during hormonal shifts

Progression of lipedema

Lipedema progresses through various stages. Early on, skin may feel smooth, but over time, texture changes and larger fat deposits develop. Without appropriate care, mobility and quality of life may be impacted. Quadrivas Therapy practitioners have experience supporting clients with lipedema. Early stages may see significant improvements, while later stages benefit from symptom management and maintaining tissue health. A maintenance program following intensive therapy helps sustain results. Combining treatment with regular movement and balanced nutrition often enhances outcomes.

Possible causes

The exact cause of lipedema is not fully understood, but hormonal influences are significant. Many women notice onset or worsening during puberty, pregnancy, or menopause, suggesting hormones play a role. Quadrivas Therapy also considers venous insufficiency as a contributing factor to the progression of the condition.

Lipedema is often seen as a fat metabolism disorder; however, research and clinical experience indicate that vascular health is a key factor. Impaired blood vessel function can reduce metabolic activity and hinder fluid and waste removal, leading to fat and fluid accumulation under the skin. Excess body weight may accelerate symptoms.
